SEIZURE TREATMENT

Rapid and erratic electrical firing in the brain is what causes seizures. This may result in momentary abnormal behaviors, movements (such as jerky, alternately stiffened arms and legs), sensations, loss of consciousness, or an altered level of consciousness. Don't try to stop the jerking or restrain the person. Preventing them from hurting themselves is the most important thing. Unless the person is in danger, do not move them. Remove any sharp or unstable objects from the area, place something soft under their head, and remain by their side. They have no chance of swallowing their tongue. Make sure there is no liquid or vomit that could choke them, and avoid putting anything in their mouth. Timing the seizure and monitoring their breathing is important. Up until they regain consciousness, speak to them calmly to reassure them. Place them in the recovery position on their side once the seizure has stopped. Put them in the recovery position as soon as you notice if they have vomited or have food or liquid in their mouth. After the seizure, if they nod off, don't wake them up but keep an eye on their breathing. Until the seizure has ended completely, don't let them eat or drink anything. They should bring someone home if at all possible.
